About APM Explorer
The app reduces ordinary input into broad hourly patterns. It can help you notice stretches of sustained interaction, quiet periods, and coverage gaps, while deliberately refusing to answer invasive questions such as what you typed or which app held your attention.
It is built with Swift and SwiftUI, runs as a menu bar agent, and keeps its SQLite activity database on the Mac.
Frequently asked questions
What does APM stand for?
APM means actions per minute: aggregate physical key downs, mouse-button downs, and reduced scroll gestures or bursts divided by monitored time. It is not words per minute and it does not know what you typed or clicked.
Does APM Explorer record my typing?
No. It never stores keys, characters, typed content, modifier flags, or individual input events. The capture boundary emits only privacy-safe activity categories and timing evidence for aggregate calculations.
Why does it need Input Monitoring permission?
macOS requires Input Monitoring for an app to observe broad keyboard and pointer activity while other apps are active. APM Explorer uses that access only to count reduced activity signals; the permission does not change its local-only data model.
Does it track which apps or windows I use?
No. Application identity, window titles, pointer location, clipboard contents, and on-screen context are never collected.
Why do some hours show partial or unavailable coverage?
Coverage can be interrupted when APM Explorer is not running, macOS is asleep, the user session is inactive, Input Monitoring is not granted, or local storage is unavailable. The chart identifies those gaps instead of treating them as zero activity.
Can I pause or remove my data?
You can revoke Input Monitoring in System Settings to stop new monitoring. To remove stored activity, open APM Explorer Settings and choose Delete Activity Data. Existing history stays only on the Mac until you delete it or its retention window expires.
Does it connect to the internet?
No. The app has no network entitlement, account system, analytics SDK, telemetry, or cloud sync. Its activity database stays inside the app's local sandbox container.
Which Macs are supported?
APM Explorer requires macOS 13 Ventura or later. It is a native menu bar app with no Dock or app-switcher presence.
